“I remember one time sitting in an internet cafe at the end of the world.” ~ This is how I want to begin to tell the story to my grandchildren about how and why I became location independent.
One time I’m sitting albeit stranded in a cafe in a little town in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. I was hot, frustrated, and fighting with my significant other. I wanted nothing more than to go back to Mazatlan.
After becoming somewhat frustrated with my situation, and not liking my location. I realized I was a half an hour from paradise and I needed to make sure that no matter what else I learned in life it was that I controlled WHERE I wanted to be at all times.
Location Independence became the driving factor in my life at that moment, much like minimalism had taken root in my life about 4 years earlier. The road to achieving Location Independence is paved with lots of hardships, trials, and errors, but at the end of the day it’s a tough journey to bear but the only one I’d ever consider undertaking.
The Reward which is The Destination is AMAZING.
Destination: Riviera Nayarit
Here is the path I’m taking towards Location Independence & Self Reliance
1. Creating an income generating system that is independent of my services, or skills. Yet utilizes the wisdom and path I’ve chosen and educates people using the wisdom I’ve gathered over the years. I’m doing this by developing one to two projects that have the potential to generate more than substantial income to live out my location independence dreams, and yet also give back to the universal community in an unselfish way.
2. Learn to live with less and genuinely be happy about it
It’s easy for a lot of people to talk about being happy with less, but I’m learning that I can be. I don’t need to constantly have every single desire in my life fulfilled just the core desires and I can live with going without every single damn fancy gadget all the time. I don’t need a new iPhone, or an iPhone touch, or a bigger monitor. In fact I’m happier without having to lust after it. It makes my life simpler. Going with less. Enjoying more the things that are really important to me.
My short term and long term goals are tied very distinctly. Frugalness, and self reliance are what’s important to me. I have a friend who makes substantially more than I could ever dream but his online business’ success is so tied to his need to be there. It’s built around his knowledge and skills, and his need to be there all the time in order to implement his vision and standards for success. This has taught me one of the most important lessons in life. That in order to truly allow my business to give me freedom I need to develop it to exist without me.
I don’t know if Location Independence is the path you are on, but I know it’s the path I’ve been on for years and I didn’t even have a title for it. However, it’s one thing to be somewhere exotic and yet still tied to a laptop. That’s independence but it’s not complete independence from this system that plagues us and weighs us down.
In the new economy we have a clear pathway towards self reliance, and location independence that we’d be foolish not to seize the moment and grab it. Unless you enjoy sitting in a cubicle, counting down the 9 to 5 every single day.
